Hehe, I would say that that was a little harsh. Perhaps he deserves it–perhaps he doesn’t realize how any information at all is an improvement from previous years. Perhaps he doesn’t see that no company meets every deadline; perhaps he doesn’t realize that Yoyo never promised, but instead preceded most (if not all) deadlines with “We hope”. There always will be people aiming to be the start of a huge movement, even creating one that just plain isn’t there if need be.
I wouldn’t be so sure as to say it is an improvement.
As far as I can see we are having less updates and releases to Game Maker than we would have if it remained a one man operation.
And while Mark didn’t often give dates for a release, at least the surprise is a lot better than being told to expect something by the end of the week and not have it four months later.
Lastly, for a one-man operation we shouldn’t expect much.. but when you have a company with several permanent & dedicated staff members working everyday and you have long term high value investors and private shareholders, transparency and delivering information to the community is very important.
“Finally, I want to criticize others who have attacked me, notably NakedPaulToast. You have every right to disagree with what I said. Trust me, as I have said above, I criticize and disagree with a lot of things. But to ‘openly’ call me an idiot was quite uncalled for. But hey, I don’t know you. I will never know you, so, not really a major issue.” - Dr. Watz0n
This thing about Yoyogames having some sort of obligation to us because we bought their product… it’s just stupid. When we buy something from them, there’s no obligation that goes with it. We give them money, and they give us a product. On the other hand, when we invest in their company, we don’t directly get anything out of that. Instead, we get partial ownership, and they have a responsibility to take some notice of us. But the idea that they need to listen because we bought something from them…
Of course, most people who read this probably won’t need convincing…
On the topic of the rest of the topic… it’s also stupid. Since they have no real obligation to us, and have made no promises, what reason have we to complain. Does anyone else think that every delay that they’ve had might not be the result of laziness?
They should owe us something. We tested their website for them before it launched. We provided feedback on it. The least they could do is let us know a little bit more of what is going on.
Your feedback is rendered free of charge. You owe them nothing but 20 bucks (if you’ve even bought the pro version) and to follow the EULA. They owe you nothing but what is written in the EULA and to follow the legislature involved with software distribution. Is full disclosure of their work written there? What purpose would posting about the progress achieve anyway? Maybe some wasted time, and you’ll have to wait just as long to get whatever it is. Your sense of entitlement is unfounded, and yes, idiotic.
YYG owes you NOTHING. Deal with it. If anything, YOU owe THEM for the existence of a free distribution system in the first place. Why aren’t you paying them to host your games, eh?
I’m somewhat surprised at the amount of attention this is getting. I guess it’s just feeding that false sense of entitlement that most GM users seem to have.

Then again, it’s your job… :)

Ha ha. That’s so true. I wonder if he’s going to get a reply call it a “Open” reply, and link us to a Rick Roll.

A quote from his response to the GMC topic, regarding NPT’s thoughts on the subject:

That’s life, my dear Watz0n.

Again, most people here don’t need convincing.

I think this letter may fall short of the truth, but it gets the point accross.

There is no doubt that I am opinionated, often too opinionated. Harsh, often too harsh. Go to extremes to make my point, perhaps to far extreme.
But in all this, I do have to commend Connor (AKA Dr. Watz0n), he has handled my ad hominem open letter with dignity and class.
I put out the bait, and he wouldn’t take it.
Don’t read this as a change in my position on his open letter, I still think it’s idiotic, but his intestinal fortitude, has my respect.
And don’t interpret this as me lightening up, that’s not gonna happen either.

Agreed. GameMaker seems to have bred a community of users with an interesting take on software, and thats a fact from many angles.
