Went fishing

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I got home from my annual fishing trip at Lake Dalrymple. Had a fabulous time.

The itinerary consisted of Fishing, Golfing, Poker, Casino, and Alcohol Consumption. Though, some of the gang don’t fish, some don’t golf, some don’t play poker, and some don’t go to the Casino. Everyone drinks though. I’m pretty sure that this year, I was the only one who participated in all the events.

The Fishing
This was actually the poorest fishing year, I can remember. The goal, as most who fish Dalrymple this time of year, want to catch Walleye(pickerel), might settle for Crappie, and throw back the Pike. Not this year. There wasn’t a Walleye to be found. The only fish that made it off the boat were Pike. That was fine by me, I like Pike.

I was somewhat fortunate, I got the first fish, the last fish, the biggest fish and the most fish. I also got two Muskies, but they were out of season and to small, they were released. (more…)

Back in a few days.

Gave some blood

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I donated blood today. Usually I, donate at work when they set up a clinic, but I found that often my schedule doesn’t allow me to attend. There’s a permanent clinik near where I live so Mrs. NPT and I set up an appointment.

I’m such a wimp though, I can’t stand looking at it when they prick my finger for the quick test, and turn my head away when they insert the tube. I won’t look at all.

I do get a kick out of all the questions they ask, during the screening process. Some consider them pretty intrusive, others homophobic and discriminatory.

Esso responds

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I voiced a complaint and wrote Esso an email, described in this entry.

I am outraged at how the cost of gasoline has skyrocketed in Ontario.

To make matters worse, now while pumping my gas, I have to watch advertisements on the monitors over the pumps. I will be emailing Pizza Pizza and all advertisers, that so long as they show advertisements on your monitors, I will not be using their products.

How much of a moron is Huckabee

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Mike Huckabee, former Republican presidency candidate, was speaking at an NRA convention. A loud noise was heard while he was speaking, he made a joke about the noise being; Barrack Obama diving to the floor because somebody was pointing a gun at him.

Caveman Craig

Monday, May 19th, 2008

My all time favorite Game Maker created game has been Seiklus, until now.

RhysAndrews, longtime and distinguished GMC member, has teamed up with his brother, TimAndrews, to create Caveman Craig.

Caveman Craig was created as an entry for the YoYoGames’ Ancient Civilisation contest, and I predicted it to be the winner, in my Red Carpet Day entry.

The game is a simulation / strategy game, starting you off in prehistoric times with three caveman credits. There are three flavours of cavemen:

  1. Hunters: Used to hunt dinosaurs and war with rival tribes.
  2. Gatherers: Used to gather dead dinosaurs and berries.
  3. Preparers: Used to prepare dinosaurs and berries, for consumption.

Sylvania responds

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Earlier I posted a complaint about the plastic, over-packaging of CFLs.

Included was an email I sent to Sylvania. Kudos to them for replying, though it was a bit of a non-answer.

My original email:

Why do all of your CFL products need to be so over-packaged in that hard plastic packaging?

Traditionally, incandescent bulbs have done just fine in the small compact, recyclable cardboard. There is no reason why CFLs can’t use a similar method.

It is hypocritical for you to be creating all the unnecessary plastic, while bragging about winning the 2008 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Banning video games

An excellent satire: Celebrating 30 Years of Video Games Killing Children

What the Politicians Said: Space Invaders will kill your children! This dangerous “game” gives players three “lives.” This will clearly make children think they can get another life after they die, thereby causing kids to start killing themselves in droves…

Real bright

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Went on a light bulb buying binge the other day. Bought a bunch of the Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) and some traditional incandescents.

What pissed me off was the packaging that the CFL bulbs use. All the manufacturers, over-package them in that hard plastic crap that you need a chain saw to open.

Now compare the packaging the traditional packaging used by incandescent bulbs. Four bulbs tightly packaged into a small amount of recyclable cardboard.

To add insult to injury, the CFL bulbs and manufactures go on, about how good their product is for the environment. What a load of crap! These guys are creating tonnes of unnecessary plastic, sitting in landfills for hundreds of years, and bragging about the environmental awards for the products wreaking havoc on the environment.

Apologies to FireFox users

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I discovered a problem with FireFox users. When FireFox attempted to display an embedded Youtube video, an internal server error occurred.

The cause was how the Youtube plug-in interpreted the link. I was creating the Youtube link exactly as I would any link, but modifying the http: to httpv: as required by the plugin. Apparently, the link should not have been written within html’s a href tag.

It worked fine for IE, but not FF. I have fixed all the links and the Youtube vids work properly for both FF and IE.

Now that it’s fixed, you can proceed to religious browser wars, as is the norm, whenever FF and IE are mentioned in the same sentence.
