I came across this piece at http://gmnews.scorptek.net, it was of particular interest to me because the creators, Stef (the dad) and Jack (the son) are good friends of mine.

I’ve known Stef for about eight years and have witnessed Jack using Game Maker. Let me assure you, Jack is indeed a true prodigy. The beginner tutorial he has posted, is just that, a tutorial for beginners. The tutorials focus on D&D, but Jack is equally skilled in GML. His skills and capabilities go well beyond what the tutorial demonstrates.

Through conversations with Stef it was obvious to me that Jack, truly is the brains behind the operation, at least regarding Game Maker. Stef pointed him in the direction of Game Maker years ago and led him through the initial hurdles he might have encountered, but from that point onward, Jack was completely self taught.
