Back at Party Poker

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

I’m back playing at Party Poker. I withdrew my winnings about nine months ago. I’ll probably blog about it sometime.

Anyway, the final board is: 10, A, K, Q, J, no possible flush.

I make a pot size bet, and the other guy folds.

Now if you’re not a poker player, especially hold’em, let me  explain what just happened. There is a straight on the board, now since there are no pairs, and no more than two of a suit, the board has the best possible hand. A straight to the Ace. It would have been a tie, and we would have split the pot. No matter what cards either of us had.

How can you not make money off these guys?

Spend some time thinking about why you don’t believe in any of the other gods.

Maybe then, you can understand why I don’t believe in your god.

A few days ago some laptops are stolen from Workplace in Vancouver.

Later on that day, “someone” uploads some pictures, taken with the webcam on one of the stolen iMacs, onto Flickr.com.

Get this, the pictures are uploaded into the flickr account of the iMac owner  The flickr account’s username and password, were saved locally on the laptop. So now, the owner of the stolen laptop has pictures of the person using the stolen laptop. He starts posting, the story spreads, and the person who has the laptop turns himself in.

Of course, he “bought” it from a friend.

Lesson to all you thieves, take a couple computer courses, before you start using your stolen laptops.

GM Server programs

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

The following topic showed up on the GMC yesterday:

Run A Gm Program As Server On A Real Server, Did someone try ?

I read it this morning, was on my way to work and therefore didn’t have time to post. Later, when I went back to contribute, to my disappointment it was closed.

@CyberTwister:
You should not be running your server program from an interactive session, you should be starting it as a service.

To install your program as a service, use the Instsrv.exe utility available on the Server 2003 Resource Kit.

If you still encounter problems, then check the event viewer for messages as to why the program failed.

GMC idiot of the week

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

This entry could very well could be called “idiot of the day”, or even “idiot of the morning”, “afternoon”, “hour”, etc. I just don’t have the energy to keep up with the prolific posts that are constantly appearing. Plus, I just loose way to much blood from banging my head on the keyboard, reading what they have to say.

I struggled with the decision of actually linking to their post, or just writing a quick management precis. For now, I’ll just summarize. Of course some gems might just be to good to pass up, with out a link.

Today, I’m not talking about any single idiot, but rather a certain breed of idiot. These are the guys who think that after somebody has answered their topic, the topic should be closed or removed. These guys haven’t yet figured out that once a topic is answered and people stop responding it will gracefully descend down into the forum abyss, where all the other topics go to die. It’s a natural process.

Today, for a few brief periods the Canadian dollar trade briefly higher than the US dollar.

The last time the Canadian dollar was worth more than it’s US counterpart was November 15th, 1976. Almost 31 years ago. Oddly enough, that was also the night René Lévesque, and PQ, his separatist party, were elected in Quebec.

Reactions are funny.

Oh no, what have I done

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Every once in a while there is an invention or discovery, that unleashes onto the world, something that simply can not be undone. I’m sure it’s well intended, and there are often good uses, but I can’t help but think that the inventor must forever be haunted; waking up at night in cold sweat, fists clenched screaming, “Oh no, what have I done”.

Nuclear fission, leading to nuclear arms, gun powder, the automatic phone dialer, all come to mind.

Today, September 19, at 11:44 , marks the 25th anniversary of yet another one of those evil creations, and it can’t be undone.

My Day

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Today was my Birthday.

About two months ago, I got a notice that my OHIP card and drivers licence card were expiring and I needed to get new photos. They expire on you birthday. Add to that my yearly car licence tag expires on your birthday as well.

Naturally I procrastinated, so here I am today, scrambling to renew my OHIP, drivers licence and tag. Luckily I had a break between 12:00 and 4:00.

Drove home, scrambled all over the house looking for the documentation from OHIP and Ministry of transport. Looked up all the supporting documentation I would need. Now started looking all over the house for my passport, birth certificate utility bill. I didn’t want to miss anything and have to wait in line at OHIP again.

Movies I’ve seen this summer

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

We go to the movies a fair amount. In order of how much I enjoyed them

1408: A Stephen King short story. Really liked it.

The Bourne Ultimatum: Have seen all the Bournes, Really liked them all. Matt Damon is a terrific actor.

Ocean’s Thirteen: I like the Ocean movies, really liked 11, a little disappointed in 12, 13 back on par with 11.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End: You’re either a fan of the franchise or you’re not.

Hairspray: Surprisingly I liked this movie. I usually don’t like comedies nor musicals. So does John Travolta, get an oscar for best actor or actress? He was outstanding.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: I’ve read all the books, seen all the movies. The “kids” are getting to old for the characters.

The Simpsons Movie: Saw it at the drive-in, probably wouldn’t have seen, except we wanted to go to the drive-in.

Is plus plus a plus

When I first learned the C language, I instantly loved it. At the time I was intimately familiar with COBOL, Fortran, BASIC, Pascal, IBM 360 Assembler, Z-80 Assembler and 6502 Assembler. I was probably moderately familiar with a few other languages but had not really embraced them.

I’m not sure, but I was probably using Pascal at the time, but had written more lines of COBOL. I hated COBOL. I liked how the structure of C resembled Pascal, but didn’t have the handcuffs of Pascals overly contraining types. But what I especially loved was the ++ operator.

It was tiny, efficient allowed you to compare, then increment, or increment then compare.

Often I wish Game Maker supported ++.
